Financial planning class emphasizes mindset, community | News
Emily Morgan began the class by discussing proactive mindsets regarding money.
PADUCAH — Family Service Society in Paducah hosted a financial literacy class at the McCracken County Public Library Thursday, highlighting how one’s mindset can guide financial planning and the value of community.
The class is required for any household that receives monthly rent or utility assistance more than once from FSS, but it is also open to anyone looking to learn. Client Advocate Emily Morgan taught the class Thursday morning.
“The heart of it is to teach clients to be proactive instead of reactive,” Morgan said. “We want to teach them how to navigate crisis situations and emergencies that they may find themselves in through education about community resources and also goal setting and mindsets.”

The classes are free and include information about local services that can help individuals and households improve their financial planning, including those available through FSS. Thursday’s class was held in the McCracken County Public Library, though they are usually held in the FFS’ building.
Morgan said the class is important for those who are struggling, especially during the holidays.
“I think the holidays are always a tougher time, especially if you are in a hard financial situation. It’s a time of year where it’s easy to get swallowed up by the chaos,” Morgan said. “Having goals and having the mindset of focusing on those goals can often help save families from financial struggle in the holidays. If they’re mindful and they’re thinking about it all year long instead of just December, then they’re set up a little bit better to navigate the holidays.”
Emily Morgan hands out sheets with resources and tips for participants to take home.
She said the class can also offer hope and encouragement for those who may feel alone in their financial struggles.
“It’s easy to get lost in your dark thoughts,” Morgan said. “When you have someone to walk alongside you like Family Service Society or other community resources, it’s important, because they help you to understand that you’re not alone. While your situation is very individualized to yourself, the loss of hope or feeling isolated, it’s not only you. It’s other people out there, and there’s community resources and folks who want to be involved and want to help you find your way.”
The next class will be held in January, though a date has not been set at this time. Information about upcoming events is posted to the organization’s Facebook page, which can be found by clicking here.
